Adapted from a Traditional English Ballad from 1700-PD

Never shall I forget the night, the stars were bright above me
And gently lent their silv’ry light, when first she vowed to love me

Tomorrow I’m bound for the new world, kind heaven then pray guide me
And keep me safely in the heart, of the girl I left behind me

The girl I left, the girl I left, the girl I left behind me
The vows we’ve made to heav’n above, shall cheer and forever bind me

Her golden hair in ringlets fair, Her eyes like diamonds shining,
Her slender waist, her heavenly face, That leaves my heart stillpining.

Ye gods above oh hear my prayer, To my beauteous fair to find me
And keep me safe until the again I’ll see, The girl I left behind me

TURNAROUND

I promised to would send for her, when the company will allow me
Such heavy thoughts my heart do fill, since leaving my darling Mary

I remember her on that wintry day, standing on the pier a waving
As I said goodbye one last time, me heart was surely breaking

The girl I left, the girl I left, the girl I left behind me
The vows we’ve made to heav’n above, shall cheer and forever bind
