THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Colorado (Sep 2021)  The idea of the song began in 2016 while visiting our daughter and grandkids in Colorado Springs.  Then I hit a brick wall with the song.  I tried several times to revive it with no luck.  Finally, I was on a writing roll after finishing the Burning Of Tulsa album, and it just magically came together.  THINGS TO KNOW: It took more than one melody to get this one.  I hope you like my choice!!

Stolen German Passport (Oct 2021)  We were on vacation in the Canary Islands, and the song title just popped into my mind.  So I sent myself an email with the title and finished it when we got home.  THINGS TO KNOW:  Texas & Mexico themes are easy targets for songs!

If These Walls Could Talk (Sep 2009):  My wife spoke this often-used phrase when we made a two-day getaway to an old Wine Village in Germany.  This time it stuck, and when we got home, I wrote the song.  This one took about five versions before I worked out the finer details!  THINGS TO KNOW:  I bounced this song off my fellow American Singer/Songwriter, Daniel T. Coates, so much I tagged him in the intro!

Who’s Gonna Play Trigger, When Willie’s Gone (Oct 2021)  Going thru my list of possible song titles, I finally took the time to write this one.  THINGS TO KNOW: I think ole Trigger deserves a rest, but to believe he would never be played again hurts me, much like Bill Monroe’s Mandolin!

Blind Date (Oct 2010)  Another song from the title list.  I remember reading an article in a magazine in the 1970s in the second verse.  The rest was easy to write!  THINGS TO KNOW:  Why could I not have been so lucky!

My First Love (Duet with Co-Writer Marty Wolfe)(Oct 2021)  TMy bud Marty posted a video by one of his bands, and the opening line of the song was “My First Love.”  I knew right then that was a song title I could work with.  So I called Marty and told him I’d found us a song to write.  Then I visited him in northern Germany, and we finished it!  THINGS TO KNOW My first love as indeed Horses!

Tejano Love Song (Apr 2004)  I am a big fan of Tejano (Tex-Mex) music going back to our Corpus Christi days.  In 2004 I heard a Peter Rowland song that featured Flaco Jimenez, and I fell in love with the melody.  So the idea of the song was natural for me!  THINGS TO KNOW:  Tejano dancers love Twirl!

House With No Love (Oct 2021)  Taken from the TV Series “The Maid.”  I was taking notes as I watched the program.  THINGS TO KNOW: It is only a rough reference to the show.  But I knew the hook the second I heard it!

Whores Of The System (Nov 2000)  I’ve been dragging this song around for 20 plus years.  Now is a good a time as any to record it.  THINGS TO KNOW.  I was a Whore of the System for 36 years.

Runaway (Dark Version) (Jul 2008)  When I wrote the original song, I made an alternate ending and shopped it around.  The other version won out.  .   THINGS TO KNOW:  But you deserve to hear this one!

Wild West Show (June 2010)  I wrote this intending to pitch it to Pullman City Harz as their theme song as it plays out just the same as their street show.  But, of course, that never happens.    THINGS TO KNOW:  I did pay tribute to the late James Dee, who was part of the show and a fixture in Pullman City Harz!

Death To The Egyptian Woman (Aug 2009)  Wicked thoughts about an evil woman I worked with.  THINGS TO KNOW:  I meant every word; she deserves to suffer.
