THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Afterlife (May 2021)  The last song written for this album.   The melody for this song came from a co-written song I wanted to record, but the co-writer is nowhere to be found, so I wrote new lyrics.  The storyline loosely comes from the TV Show Afterlife.  THINGS TO KNOW:  The other song was better, but it will never see the light of day.

Best Daddy (May 2010)  Inspired by my son-in-law’s urge to be the “Best Ranger” in the Army.  I made a Girl and Boy Version of the song!  THINGS TO KNOW:  I reworked the melody an lyrics in May 2020!!

Christmas Time At 81 (Dec 2007)  The inspiration for the song came from comments by an 81 year old acquaintance and her complaints about her children at Christmas.  THINGS TO KNOW:  Pretty close to true!

Hank Said It (Oct 2014)  First of seven Lockdown Songs.  I was going through all my unfinished songs and when I found it, it was completely written and I’d never made even a demo of it.   So, I made melody and updated the theme!!  THINGS TO KNOW..A lot of folks are gonna be surprised when get to meet their new neighbors at the Pearly Gates!!

I Let You Be You (Jul 2010):  Another song I wrote at Pullman City Edging on the second day.  It was simply a phase I had floating around in my head..  THINGS TO KNOW:  My wife have been married 47 years.

I’m Gonna Stop Drinking Today (Oct 2006)  Don’t remember what motivated me to write this, but the theme is kinda a New Years Resolution kind of thing…more exercise, eat better, etc, etc.  THINGS TO KNOW:  I was worried about my wife’s first impression when hearing the title!!!!

Juarez (August 2013)  This song was first written as “From Napoli With Love” (Which appears on Volume One), but I wanted a Texas theme, so I made a ballad based upon the Tom Russell Song “Down The Rio Grande” ; THINGS TO KNOW:  I’ve never been to Juarez, but I went over the Rio Grande at Laredo/Nuevo Laredo numerous times while stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas!!

Just A Cowgirl (Jan 2008-Apr 2021).  I have NEVER worked so hard trying to make a theme for a song to work.  I must have rewritten it 10 or more times.  Things to know:  This was the website title for “That Girl Who Sang Johnny Cash” Steffi Glässer.

Last night in Huntsville (Apr 2021) The second of XX Lockdown songs.   The oldest idea (15 years or more) on my long list of song ideas was this one.  About what goes through someone’s mind their last night in jail.  Things to Know:   And it was good enough of an idea that I wrote a spin-off called “Innocent Man” that appears on Vol Three.

Learn to hit the curve (May 2021) The third of seven Lockdown Songs.  Same list, maybe a five year old idea.  Its all about dealing with live when things go wrong.   We prepared to succeed in a world where everything goes straight down the middle.  THINGS TO KNOW:  The idea I think came from a Clint Eastwood Movie called “Trouble With the Curve”.

Molehills (Oct 2009)  Another song written on the road!  About letting your guard down and not fighting to get ahead.  THINGS TO KNOW:  One of Navy supervisors was a guy named Art!

Money back guarantee (Apr 2021) The fourth of seven Lockdown Songs.  Same list, maybe 4-5 years old.  Thought it would make a good song theme.  THING TO KNOW:  I really do wish there was such a store

One More Day (May 2021) The fifth of seven Lockdown Songs.  My high school friend passed away in 2019.  I came up with the half the chorus with One More Day as the hook.  I tried a few more times with NADA.  So after all the other song ideas were finished I moved on to this one  The only difficult part was determining “Who” is telling the story.  I changed it 3 times.  THINGS TO KNOW:  I’m sure somewhere out there, there’s a already a song with that title and theme, but this one is truly my original thoughts.

Paid By The Hour (May 2020) The sixth of seven Lockdown Songs.  This was one of the early ones in the 2020 Corona Virus Lockdown, when I first I began working thru my “Song Ideas” and found this title. !  THINGS TO KNOW: My ex-sister in law real name is Betty Lou Chaney!!

Slow Lane (Jul 2012)  Another road song, two days in a Irish Pub, 250 miles north. A blues number.  THINGS TO KNOW..I’m not a blues man, but who can’t dig a 12 bar blues shuffle!

Soldier Calls Home (Nov 2004)  First written as an instrument.  Shortly after I put words to it.!!  THINGS TO KNOW..The song was when my future son in law when off to Iraq.

Sunday Afternoon (May 2020)  The seventh of seven Lockdown songs from 2020.  Song was inspired by events surrounding the 2012 death of my wife’s Aunt who raised her. THINGS TO KNOW:  I always loved it in movies when cowboy’s would called the preacher “Padre”!!

The Indentured (Oct 2009)  Song was written back when I still thought my family heritage was Irish and we came over as Indentured Servants.  THINGS TO KNOW:  My family line of Foley is from near Dudley English where the ONLY Foley’s of England lived.  I visited there in 2019.
