DADDY’S FUNERAL Written by: Barry P. Foley Copyright © 24 Aug 2011 PC Eging
When the phone rings at one A.M, it never brings good news It’s my sister on the line, saying the words I already knew By two, I got my ticket and rental car on line Took 59 hours to see that funeral home sign There were no words to say, because we all knew After so long in bed, everything had already been said
Mama held up the funeral, so I could be there Saw some folks for the first time in nearly 40 years Family and friends, came with baskets of food Always willing to help, that’s what country folks do
There were no words to say, because we all knew After so long lying in bed, everything already been said
After a service that would make my Daddy proud We drove 20 miles up to his graveside It was 90 in shade when they sang Amazing Grace Then an old log truck came up the hill, brought a tear to my face
There were no words to say, because we all knew After so long in bed, everything that needed to said had been said
